Day 1 - Adelaide to Santiago

Today was a particularly long day, as we flew from Adelaide to Sydney, Sydney to Santiago and because we crossed the date line we arrived in Santiago before we left Sydney and it's still Wednesday.
For Dad's benefit (though I also included this in an email), it was an uneventful 747 flight from Sydney. We were upstairs, which was pleasant and quiet, though it means the windows are quite low (and small as it's such an old plane) so views are limited. There was cloud over much of the pacific, and particularly over NZ, where the map said we flew roughly over Invercargill.
Coming into Santiago it's interesting to see the foothills stretching down to the coast with farming in the valleys. We were on the left side of the plane so couldn't see much of the Andes. Santiago itself is very hazy (which I think was the case when we transited here before, so likely a permanent state), but there were some snow-capped mountains visible through the murk.
Coming into the city it's largely contemporary but the wealth is limited or restricted - there was a lot of rubbish around, some slums and around the hotel there is a lot of graffiti. The last may be due to the ongoing demonstrations nearby (which we didn't see), as the graffiti largely related to justice, freedom etc

We wandered around Santiago a little. The hotel where we're staying, The Singular, is very relaxed and comfortable and it's on the edge of the city centre. Lynn has been quite groggy and vague due to jetlag, even after a nap when we arrived, so it was a short walk and we came back for a drink and light meal in the hotel's rooftop bar.

Anyway, going to bed early due to jetlag (or is it late?)
